Coastal Style Outdoor Sconces

Coastal Interiors, House FeatureAnneke McConnell

Hey friends! It's that time of year that we tend to focus on those outdoor projects, and if updating your lighting is on the list, I've rounded up a variety of coastal style outdoor sconces for you. Below are my top 10 favorites from today's post (because choosing only 5 was too tough!).

When it come to choosing outdoor wall sconces (or outdoor lighting of any kind), there are several things to keep in mind before choosing a winning fixture.  Ask yourself these questions when looking around?

1. Are you in need of statement lighting (usually more lights and larger) or integral lighting (more of a subdued sconce with indirect functional lighting)?

2. What finish do you prefer? Black, antique brass, stainless steel, or even a pop of color with red, blue, or yellow like these >>> click here.

3. What's your preference for seeing or not seeing the bulb(s)?  If choosing a sconce with glass, consider whether you prefer clear, frosted, seeded glass, or another decorative glass finish.  If you can see the bulb, what type of bulb do you prefer? This depends of the type of light needed, so always be sure to check that first! Edison bulbs are a great option

4. Also when choosing outdoor sconces, consider whether you would like them to be dimmable and if not, what "brightness" you are looking for. The lower the watts the lower the light output.  Most bulbs can be found with the same wattage, but different "color" as well, meaning more warmth/yellow versus cool and white.

5. Last, but not least, consider the "cleanability" factor and ease of changing a bulb. If you hire someone to maintain your overall house needs, this may not be a factor. However if it's on you or another person in your household to change the bulbs, the ease of changing them out should at least be recognized and considered.

I hope this helps you to find that perfect outdoor sconce for your home. They really can change and complete the look of your home!

Goose Rocks Beach Cottage by Whitten Architects

Home Decor, Home Blog Posts, Coastal Interiors, House FeatureAnneke McConnell

Often times when we jump into decorating our homes, we debate and research and wait, completely overanalzying and second guessing our decisions.  Today's beach cottage home feature via Whitten Architects is proof that keeping things simple and uniform can be a beautiful recipe for success - making a house feel calm, cohesive and welcoming.

***To view more photos from today's home feature, and to see further details, resources, and collaborators, head to Whitten Architects' website HERE.

This elevated Goose Rocks Beach Cottage is located in Kennebunkport, Maine, on a beautiful dune with views of the Atlantic Ocean.  With seagulls blue, beach sand neutrals, and casual lifestyle textures, this home is suited for entertaining and well as an active family lifestyle.

I absolutely LOVE the mix of contemporary elements with clean lines, yet the coziness of multiple nook spaces balances everything so well. I'm pretty sure our kiddos would be found in these built in bench spaces OFTEN!

The open concept between the kitchen, dining, and living room flows really well.  As a family who lives in a smaller beach home, I can't help but notice the sleek integration of storage from the kitchen to the built in benches, above the fireplace as well as the furniture.

Even with a cohesive color palette of turquoise / teal, tans, whites, grays, etc., there is a wide variety of textures used which adds TONS of interest to the beach cottage.  You have both wood and tile flooring, plenty of beautiful white planked walls (never met a shiplap wall I didn't love!), metal railing, mixed metals between hardware (drawer pulls, doorknobs, etc.) and lighting (this sconce is a coastal FAVE), etc.

I love how the shiplap extends to the ceiling here with those beautiful natural wood beams. What a FUN game room with those blue acrylic bar stools, built in benches, nautical sconces, and ping pong table!

When it comes to the master bedroom, again, all of the planked walls are just beautiful, and the choice of bed of patio furniture really allow you to take in the view without any obstructions.  Some people may prefer roller shades or curtains for privacy or blocking light, but what a gorgeous view to wake up to!

And no beach house is complete without a fire pit!  For a long time we had a gas fire pit, but living in the Seattle area (Pacific Northwest) just really lends itself to needing a wood burning fire pit.  It typically gives off much more heat and of course is best for s'mores (my husband has a thing for making s'mores with reeses peanut butter cups - anyone else?). ;-)

I hope you've enjoyed today's featured cottage and found inspiration for your own home.  Remember, making a house a home takes time. Enjoy the moment and be thankful with what you have and where you are today! :-)
